Dry Needling
Resolve pain, dysfunction, and promote healing
Trigger points are tight, shortened muscles. Inserting a very thin needle into the affected area releases muscle tension and normalizes function. This can help resolve pain and dysfunction, while promoting healing.
Does dry needling hurt?
Most people do not feel the needle going through the skin. When the needle gets into the trigger point, you may experience a slight cramping or aching in the area. This may be similar to the muscle fatigue you might experience after exercising. Some people do not feel anything.
Is this Acupuncture?
Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture.
Dry needling is a direct, medical technique that targets trigger points. This is only performed after a thorough evaluation of the bone, muscle and nervous systems. Dry needling is performed by a licensed physical therapist.
Acupuncture is performed by an acupuncturist who has been trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or the Five Element model. It includes different assessment methods and treatment goals.
Prevention
Injury Prevention Screenings
Be prepared for your future endeavors
Whether your goals are sport-specific, or lifestyle-based, Meg starts by assessing your body’s strengths and weaknesses. Using this evaluation, Meg creates a customized exercise plan you can follow at home or at the gym. This plan will help you reach your goals while remaining injury-free.
Workplace Ergonomics
Assess your work station. Adjust your ergonomics.
Ergonomic Assessments
Many ongoing muscle and joint problems are related to posture, body mechanics and faulty work station arrangements. When exposed to these factors for a long time, musculoskeletal dysfunction will persist.
Meg has successfully helped hundreds of patients resolve musculoskeletal dysfunction. She teaches her patients how to properly move, sit, stand or lift, based on their particular jobs or tasks.
Meg is happy to schedule a time to assess your work station and make ergonomic recommendations that support your physical therapy treatment plan.
Movement Assessments
Move intentionally. Move pain-free.
Get moving, correctly
Meg is trained in the Selective Functional Movement Assessment model (SFMA). The SFMA assesses the complex, multi-directional movements that occur with our daily tasks and athletic activities, and sometimes become dysfunctional. Traditional physical therapy range of motion and flexibility testing often misses this type of problem.
By identifying movement dysfunction, Meg can create an exercise plan that helps you restore proper movement patterns. This type of plan also helps you learn how it feels to move correctly. This results in decreased pain and stiffness and improved athletic performance. Movement assessments can then be repeated to determine how effective the exercise plan has been.
Exercise Prescription
Establish a Plan, Surpass Your Goals
Specific exercise plan designed to fit your goals and lifestyle.
Based on your input and a thorough assessment, Meg works with you to develop an exercise plan that:
- Works into your life and time constraints.
- Addresses all aspects of body movement dysfunction.
- Increases your strength and flexibility so you can perform every-day tasks safely.
- Helps you optimize your athletic performance.
- Maintains and builds upon progress made during therapy sessions.
Meg believes exercise plans should be achievable and not overwhelming. She will prescribe one or two exercises specific to your condition, and gradually advance your program as you master the exercises.
